Below you will find some examples of my library-related writing and design work. Feel free to get in contact if you have any questions or comments on any of this.
From Portland State University:
As the Temporary Distance Learning Librarian at PSU, I have been responsible for the development and implementation of a flexible and extensible infrastructure for the creation, management, and presentation of library learning objects; as well as the design of foundational information literacy and program-specific learning objects.
- Using Information: This is one of the modular information literacy tutorials I built for PSU. The different pages are served from a customized version of Dokeos, an open-source learning management system. Content can be created, edited, and sequenced into tutorials within Dokeos, allowing users to mix and match content and create customized tutorials for different purposes. This tutorial also contains some dynamic content created in Adobe Captivate (see "Take Notes!" and "Record the information you need to cite your sources".)
- Portland State WorldCat: This is an example of a screencast-type tutorial. This tutorial introduces users to Portland State Worldcat, the WorldCat Local implementation launched at the PSU Library in January 2010. This Tutorial was created using Adobe Captivate (with help from FastStone Capture, GIMP, and Audacity).
From Mercy Corps:
While most of the work I did at Mercy Corps was with internal systems, I did give a couple of presentations on the work I did there with Clearspace, the enterprise collaboration platform in use at Mercy Corps. See here (caution - large file) for a poster I presented at the Sofia 2008 conference on Globalization and the Management of Information Resources (in Sofia, Bulgaria, November 12, 2008); and here for the abstract and PowerPoint from a presentation at Online Northwest (in Corvallis, Oregon, February 13, 2009).
Library-Related Web Development:
I have been involved with a couple web development projects or the Oregon Library Association and the Oregon State Library.
- Oregon Authors: In August 2009 I took over development responsibilities for Oregon Authors, an online database of Oregon writers. The site was custom-written for the Oregon Library Association in PHP (with a MYSQL database). Since taking over, I have mainly been working to improve the content editing/updating workflow.
- Oregon Reads 2009: I created and maintained the website for Oregon Reads 2009, a statewide reading program for Oregon’s Sesquicentennial.
Select Coursework from the Emporia State University MLS Program
Here is some of my favorite work from my graduate studies. The selected items (with the exception of the eScience bibliography) focus primarily on my interests in the intersection of libraries, technology, and cultural identity.
- Library Services to Emerging Immigrant Communities: Library resources and cultural preservation
- An Annotated Bibliography of Resources Related to Multilingual Library Cataloging and Access
- E-Science and Libraries: An annotated bibliography
- Diaspora and the Internet: A bibliography of resources on migrant use of internet technologies
For more on my experience in the Emporia program, feel free to look through my MLS Capstone portfolio.
